Because your eyes are your window to the world, healthy vision is the most precious of your senses.
At Vision Wellness, our entire staff takes personal as well as professional pride in helping you protect your vision. We carefully blend use of the latest eye care technology with everyday common sense to give you peace of mind today and well into the future. Because we have a highly-trained staff, the latest equipment and the ability to dispense eyeglasses and contact lenses, we can coordinate all of your eye care in one convenient place.
We regularly provide services to patients who come to us with specific symptoms as well as to those whose health or activity level may put their eyes at risk. Some patients come to us because they are aware of a family history of eye concerns. Diabetes, high blood pressure or challenging sports activities, for example, suggest monitoring and, perhaps, specially-designed equipment to protect the eye.
Because about 90 percent of all eye injuries and 50 percent of blindness are preventable, we believe that everyone should have a lifelong vision health plan. We educate our patients so they can be proactive with eye wellness, and we encourage periodic eye examinations whether or not a patient is having signs of a potential problem.
Many of our patients consider comprehensive eye testing as part of their annual physical examination. They understand that early treatment can make a big difference in eye wellness. Our patients thank us time and again for finding issues before they become problems – saving them time, money and unnecessary worry.
Eyecare Milestones
- Children
- At birth
- Beginning life with healthy eyes is a key to potential lifelong learning. Children, particularly infants, are not generally aware of what they cannot see.
- Before starting school (ages 3 or 4)
- Before beginning pre-school or elementary school, children should be examined for close vision and depth perception as well as distance vision. Testing beyond simple screening can detect conditions such as astigmatism, so corrections can be made to provide clear vision as early as possible during that critical period of brain development before the age of five.
- We want parents to be confident that their children’s eyes are focusing properly and those young eyes are working together to encourage reading skills and other schoolroom activities. When children are having difficulty reading and “hate it”, the root of the problem often is poor vision which can be improved easily with corrective lenses.
- Throughout school years as needed
- Eyes change as children grow, and examinations are recommended every year or two to ensure that eye wellness continues from elementary school into the tweens and the teens. Sports activities may require special goggles to protect healthy eyes. Contact lenses can improve vision while nurturing self-esteem. Gentle molding may offer a vision solution as an alternative to LASIK.
- A qualified eye professional knows what tests to conduct and when to prescribe corrections in children and youth to provide the most successful result. As children mature, for example, color screening may influence a child’s interests today as well as eventual career choices as a young adult.
- Throughout the school years, clear vision provides a critical essential tool to support quality learning.
- Adults
- Young adults: 20s and 30s
- Vision changes generally slow down or stop altogether in the 20s and 30s. We recommend regular examinations every 3 to 5 years for young adults with no problems to establish a baseline reflecting eye health and to identify signs that point to possible needs in the future.
- Use of computers or video games, however, can affect eye health in this age group, and people with glasses, contact lenses or other problems should be tested more frequently. This is the recommended time for refractive surgery such as LASIK to improve or correct vision and for enhancing appearance.
- Middle years: 40s, 50s, 60s
- As patients mature, their eyes begin to change more frequently. We recommend examinations every 2 to 4 years to ensure eye wellness and identify concerns to watch.
- Patients may need specialty glasses to see their computers, experience dry eyes and eye fatigue, and marked change in near vision. Many middle years patients show an interest in contact lenses.
- Aging eyes
- After 65, examinations should be every year or two because vision changes are more common even for adults who have had excellent lifelong vision and healthy eyes. Early symptoms apparent only to the doctor can be identified, so we may recommend examinations as frequently as every 6 months for those with special concerns such as glaucoma, cataracts, tearing, macular degeneration or a family history of eye concerns. Early intervention may save a patient’s vision or at least delay vision loss.
- Common eye symptoms experienced by this age group are difficulty identifying faces, reading mail and driving. We understand how to improve or correct many of these vision problems and the importance of relieving anxiety for these patients and helping them preserve their independence.
